The idea for a regional speleological organization emerged in 1994, when speleological societies from Albania, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia signed a protocol for cooperation. This vision expanded, inviting other Balkan nations to join in a common mission of exploration, research, and friendship.
On September 7, 2002, representatives from eight countries met in Vratza, Bulgaria, and officially founded the Balkan Speleological Union (BSU). Guided by the spirit of the International Union of Speleology, they adopted a statute and pledged to work together in one of the world’s most spectacular caving regions – the Balkan Peninsula.
Since its first event, Otris 2003 in Greece, BSU has organized Balkan Cavers’ Camps, scientific expeditions, and cultural initiatives such as the “We and Caves” international photo contest. In 2014, after twelve years of activity, BSU achieved formal legal status and strengthened global ties, becoming an Associated Organization of the International Union of Speleology in 2019.
Today, BSU unites speleologists from across the region, fostering cooperation, promoting cave conservation, and celebrating the unique underground heritage of the Balkans.
